The Vanuatu Police Force has launched Operation India Alpha to strengthen security ahead of the country’s 46th Independence celebrations, with the aim of making this year’s event the safest and most peaceful on record.

Police Commissioner Kalshem Bongran launched the operation yesterday morning, saying the force will focus on proactive policing, crime prevention, traffic management and public reassurance during the celebrations.

“Our objective this year is clear – to ensure the 46th Independence celebrations are the safest, most peaceful and most orderly national celebrations we have ever experienced through a strong police presence, early intervention and effective traffic management.”

With six days remaining before Independence Day, the Commissioner said large public celebrations often bring increased movement of people and vehicles, public entertainment and alcohol consumption, all of which can create risks to public safety.

“It is the responsibility of the Vanuatu Police Force to ensure these celebrations are properly planned, effectively coordinated and professionally policed.”

Operation India Alpha will be carried out across the country as police work to ensure communities can celebrate Vanuatu’s 46th Independence in a safe, secure and peaceful environment.
