Yesterday, 3 December, people across the country came together to celebrate International Disability Day with the theme:
“Leftemap lidasip wetem pipol wetem disability blong wan inclusive futja”

The day is not just something to mark on the calendar, but a reminder of the importance of inclusion and equality for all men and women with disabilities.

Community Engagement Officer at the Vanuatu Society for People with Disability, Simon Pakoa, explained that the main message behind the event is that everyone is equal and has rights.

Simon Pakoa – Community Engagement Officer, VSPD:
“This activity is to state that they have value. A lot of times we look down on them, but we must see that we are all citizens, we all have laws, so they are members of the community.”

Minister for Youth, Justice and Community Services Job Sam Andy was also present and highlighted some of the work the government is doing with its partners.

Minister Job Sam Andy:
“I want to ask the public that now the team is developing a Disability Bill of Protection and Promotion, and also the development of a policy to help the government support people with disabilities. We see a lot of developments in it and also financial support that partners are giving, especially the Australian Government.”

A man living with a disability since 2023, James Andrew Voratoalak, also shared some challenges he faces.

James Andrew Voratoalak – Person living with disability:
“One of the main ones is families at home. Families must recognize those in the home who have disability. We all have to come to understand that they need assistance, from families or friends, to assist people with disabilities.”

During the celebration, there was also a launching of the Shefa Provincial Disability Committee.
