Managing a football grand final is never easy, but referee Delvin Joel won the hearts of fans last Saturday as she took charge of the decisive clash between Erakor Golden Star FC and North Efate United FC.
The match was the grand final of the inaugural Fit & Fierce football tournament, held as part of Vila Central Hospital’s 50th Golden Jubilee celebrations.
Joel, who comes from Torba Province, served as the center referee in the high-stakes match, impressing players, supporters, and officials with her calm and courageous performance.
Port Vila Football Association President and Vanuatu Football Federation Referees Chairman, Harry Atison, praised Joel’s achievement.
“She is a woman with a strong heart. Even though women don’t play in the Fit & Fierce tournament, she represented many women and mothers. All the fans said she managed the game well. On behalf of the referees, I salute her courage. This is a message for every girl to see her action and follow her example,” Atison said.
Joel’s role in the final highlighted the growing presence and recognition of women in Vanuatu’s football scene, both on and off the field.
